CARY, N.C. — Blas Perez had a hat trick, Fabian Castillo provided the go-ahead goal and FC Dallas overcame the upset bid of the NASL’s Carolina RailHawks on Wednesday to advance to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup semifinals with a 5-2 victory.
FC Dallas trailed before Perez equalized (23rd minute) through Tesho Akindele’s chip. In the 34th minute, Je-Vaughn Watson broke down the left flank and passed to Perez, who buried it for a 2-1 lead. The RailHawks evened the match three minutes later, however, slotting home a penalty.
Castillo cut through the Carolina defense on a long run before scoring to give FCD the go-ahead goal just before halftime. Mauro Diaz (90th) and Perez (90+) secured the victory with late tallies.
FC Dallas will host the Philadelphia Union in a semifinal on August 12.
