For the second week in a row the Red Raiders have to get an offensive score late in the game to survive a non-conference matchup. Once again it was a Davis Webb to Bradley Marquez pass that help seal the victory. Webb got off to another slow start in this game as the Red Raiders fell behind early on 6-0. The Miners hit a field goal as time expired to extend their lead.
Newcomer Justin Stockton got the scoring started for the Red Raiders when he took a handoff 75 yards to the endzone. They would also add a field goal and a touchdown pass to Bradley Marquez to go into halftime up 16-13. Marquez who had three touchdowns in this game to go along with two last week. Marquez has quickly become Webb’s favorite target.
This week will be huge for this young team as coach Kliff Kingsbury will need to get his team re-focused. The Red Raiders once again were heavily penalized in this game. Not only were they flagged on double digit occasions but they were very costly. After holding the Miners, the Red Raiders would get called for having two players with the same number on the field and sideline interference. Had the penalties not been called the Red Raider would have gotten the ball back. Instead the Miners were able to take advantage and get a touchdown on the drive.
The boys from Lubbock should feel lucky that they are headed home still undefeated in the 2014 season with a game against Arkansas coming next week.
