Spurs Sweep Grizzlies; Advance To Round 2

Yesterday afternoon, the San Antonio Spurs completed a 4 game sweep of their first round NBA Playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies with a 116-95 win at the Fedex Forum.

It was a series that was expected to be dominated by the silver and black as the Grizzlies came in battered by injuries and had lost 14 of their final 17 games. Despite what was on paper, the Spurs still had to prove themselves on the court coming off a franchise best regular season record of 67-15.

The first two games seemed easy for the Spurs as they cruised to victory by an average of 29 points at home. Defensive Player Of The Year Kawhi Leonard led the way with 20 points in the 106-74 game 1 victory, then gave the scoring load to Patty Mills, who scored 16 in game 2 to lead the Spurs to a 94-68 victory and take a 2-0 lead to Memphis.

Game 3 would be the Spurs biggest test of the series. After taking a 13 point lead in the first half, Memphis rallied back behind Zach Randolph and Matt Barnes. Randolph had a rare productive game against San Antonio, scoring 20 points and helping Memphis take the lead into the fourth quarter. But Leonard answered the challenge by scoring 32 points and hitting a three in the corner in the final minute to clinch a 96-87 victory. Game 4 was more of the same as the Spurs bounced back from a sluggish first half to outscore the Grizzlies 37-21 in the third quarter and cruised to a 21 point series ending victory.

The Spurs now have a week off before opening the second round of the NBA Playoffs. They’ll either face the Oklahoma City Thunder or the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference Semifinals. The Spurs went a combined 6-2 against those two teams this season; 4-0 vs Dallas, 2-2 vs OKC. The two teams play game 5 of their series tonight with OKC leading 3 games to 1.
